SecondLife Group Limit - Who speaks for the masses?

The group limit use to be 10, but people bitched that it wasn't enough. It was raised to 25 and still people bitch now that it isn't enough. Are you so popular that you need to be in every group that you are invited to? I say no. Are you some land mogul that needs 25 different groups? Mayhaps. Point is that even if they raised it to 50 or even 100, people will still bitch that it just isn't enough.

Veyron has started a blogger movement for people to vote on the Jira to increase the group limit. I didn't join the movement at first because well, I don't care about increasing the group size limit. Honestly it's more about self-control & prioritizing in my opinion. Hawks & I don't even have all of our group slots filled. We belong to 5 that we created & use, the rest are ones that we feel we want to be a part of, but do not necessarily *need*, with room for more.

The neatest thing since pawpkorn was the subscribe-o-matic. I still belong to a lot of fashion/designer groups without taking up spots. More people should use that if it's available.

I guess my stand is that there are more pressing things to be bitching to LL about other than increasing the group limit. I think the Jira is a great way for LL to listen to their residents, but when it's used for such mediocre things such as this, the important issues may get buried or lost in the crap. Just be thankful you have any group slots at all.

Censorship & Online Anonymity

I haven't had enough coffee yet to properly verbalize how I feel about all this... wait... Yup, it's anger and confusion. Decide for yourself how you feel over this.

Burning Life Censored - This is all over Bloglines but the one that gives real there info is on the official Burning Life Blog. [read here] This angers me. Why? Since when did art become broadly offensive? Honestly. One single statue, Linden censorship & a PG sim caused an artist protest & had I known, I would have been there joining hands & dancing naked along side them. This is utterly ridiculous.

Who Are You? - Identity Verification Comes to SL. They want to be able to 'trust' us? As Robin Linden states "identity verification is voluntary for both Residents and estate owners." If it's voluntary, how many will actually do it? I'm on the fence with this issue. I have no problem verifying myself. Do I feel I should have to? No.

WindLight Wholesome Goodness

Okay everyone show of hands here, who misses WindLight? I do, I do! You know what makes it worse? Torley Linden's fantasmic pics all over Snapzilla making me feel so jellious. *sigh* So here's some uppity updates:
[cross-posted from Torley's Wiki]

[2007-08-20] When is First Look: WindLight coming out again?

Hopefully in a few weeks. I earlier hoped it would come out by the end of August, but it doesn't look like we'll hit that. The WindLight Team has been very busy fixing bugs (including those I've reported), and today, we just launched an internal testing round for Lindens (because previously, it was mainly just the WindLight Team using it). I apologize for the delay because I know how anxious a lot of you are, particularly from comments I've been getting on my snapshots.

Also for emphasis, you should know (if you don't already) that WindLight isn't just about "pretty skies" — performance improvements, rendering optimizations, and code cleanup to improve the viewer are an important part of it too. It's a false dichotomy that we spar between bug fixes vs. new features, and I am dogged (and obsessed) about improved performance & stability (aka P&S) for Second Life.

[2007-08-25] WindLight: Internal testing continues

Anyhoo, I continue to both formally test WindLight and informally use it everyday. Internal bug-churning continues; I recently announced, within Linden Lab, an internal First Look as it were, to precede the public FL. My concerns right now? Partially to do with aesthetics (subjective, I know... tricky tricky!) because I'm finding a number of scenes look too white or washed out, e.g. noon with local lighting. HARD to understand if I don't show pictures or if you're not actually using it, but...

We have fallback mode ("shaders off"), which doesn't have clouds, but still looks better than the current sky, and is supported even if your computer doesn't have a fancy graphics card. And it doesn't exhibit the really bright overcasting of the WindLight Shaders, so I toggle on/off for relative comparison. We'll keep adapting it, Pastrami Linden has been tweaking the default day cycle because he cares so passionately about making it photorealistic. Yes, photorealistic. The ripple water has gone through several iterations too: you may've heard reflections got added as an option (understandably, negates performance on slower computers), but the most recent one looks SEXIER than ever. (I can remember when we got the first ripple water added, it and it looked like "liquid bling".)

So, it's the weekend now. I'm casually sauntering inworld and doing everyday stuff. I'm also warmly concerned about overall performance, we have some bugs to work out with that because we earlier, and continue to find issues that counteract the gains done with the aforementioned optimizations. Everyone on the team wants us to be plus, positive with that, so not only do you have prettier skies, but a better experience (that's the word!) too. Wider testing tends to reveal more, so I'm looking forward to your help come public First Look re-release.

LOTS LOTS LOTS of changes have been made since last public FL: WindLight so please don't base final judgment on that. A number of crashes were fixed. (We hate those!) I know shiny was dull in early releases, well now, it shines. Even better, it uses less CPU power ("single-pass shiny"). A lot of known WindLight issues were already fixed internally, and in our release notes, we'll document all the other changes that happened behind-the-scenes so you get a more comprehensive understanding of the work that went into WindLight.

[2007-08-27] WindLight: Ripple water custom settings

Like the sky, we've added the ability to customize the look of ripple water. Like the sky, it's viewer-side for now but we eventually want to make this all share-able assets like any inventory item. I'm having a great time changing parameters like the glassiness of the water, not to mention you can alter the normal map to come out with some really tripped-out FX. Keep referring to my Flickr photostream for more examples — I'm so excited for the time when you get to enjoy this hands-on!

Also, it looks like (subjectively) stuff with WindLight shaders on is still too bright at certain times like noon. Pastrami, Bridie, hopefully some QA engineers, and I will be going on a "shader safari" to investigate further this week.

To those of you who sent in questions re: deprecating scripting calls, we haven't decided what we'll do with some of them yet. Some will stay for the time being like llCloud, because we're keeping the classic cloud layer (see VWR-960) until such time we have a full 3D replacement, dubbed Nimble, for 'em. We do want to make a lot of the finer bits scriptable — imagine a rock concert scripted with songs to coincide with dramatic sky changes? But that is further down the road and relies on current work to be done first... so let's keep going. :)

Downtime Tomorrow

Second Life will be down for updates again on Wednesday 22 August from 9am 8am to 11am SLT (US Pacific). Lots of changes are going in for first stage of the Heterogenous Grid, and some of these changes can't be undertaken in a rolling restart. Not and still have the grid, you know, work for the duration.

This update is completely independent of any viewer versions that may be running around. One does not require the other.

[Update: Linden Lab say they need an extra hour, and will be starting at 8am, not 9am]

4 MGs + Voice + The Block = Fun For All

First off let me say I know that a lot of people are peeved when SL behaves badly and they (like me) blog their frustrations. Well, not today. Today I want to say "I LOVE YOU SL". Yup, I went mad shopping, tp'd at least 12 times, kept my hair (among other attachments), received all my purchases, voice worked, I barely lagged (when I did it was cause I was 2m from a blingtard), and had no issues that could even be considered complainable today. [knocks on wood]

So Aka & I hit our last shopping stop - The Block & decided to rest our tired tootsies on some boxes outside of Form. We people watched & voiced the whole time. Not too long after, Rosie logged in and then Laylah joined us as well. Four MGs and voice while people watching turned into mass funning. Let me see if I can sum it up:

Laylah: "BOYS! C'mere, the doctor says it's not contagious"
Rosie: "Excuse me [insert guys name here] can you get in photo range please?"
JellyBean: "I hate that AO, you see it? He keeps scratching his goatee, think he got crabs in it from that girl he's following?"
Akasha: *laughs*

JellyBean: "Welcome to Form, new additions & AO to the right, but if you're looking for a good time Laylah is on *MY* right."
Laylah: "HEY! I don't take plastic!"

Seriously it was a riot of like an hour of non-stop laughing & rawness. Let's do it again tomorrow! Oooo and charge admission! Same box, same sim!

Scheduled Downtime - LL Google Calendar

Linden Lab: Scheduled Downtime, Wednesday 8/15, 9am-11am (PDT)

Second Life will be unavailable from 9:00am-11:00am PDT (16:00-18:00 GMT) for a scheduled update. No viewer update will be required.

We need to block off some time to have the grid empty for some server code upgrades and database work. We’ll be keeping the downtime as short as possible, but it looks like it make take 2 hours.

After the downtime we’ll allow logins to the grid, but shortly thereafter start a rolling restart of the grid’s regions to have them pick up the newer code. This will take approximately 3 hours to hit the whole grid.

The restarts will introduce server-side voice improvements (reducing bogus invites, etc) as well as the first iteration of our Het Grid work (no special controls for region owners yet; it simply allows Linden to have finer control over grid upgrades).

I’ve started publishing a Google Calendar of SL Scheduled Downtimes (also available for iCal). Feedback appreciated.

[Update: Oops, had the GMT times wrong. Sorry about that!]

Grid Issues

Could SL be anymore borked today? Mayhaps. So I just crashed playing Tringo and now I can't get back in but hey! They're claiming voice is fixed.

[Updated] Second Life Grid Partially Enabled

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 at 10:34 AM PDT by: rheyalinden

[Update 2:00PM Pacific on 08/08/07]
We have logins to the grid shortly, but not all regions will be initially available. This means that you may need to log into a different region than you normally do. Logging in may also take longer than usual or require a few attempts as we are not yet running at full capacity.

The ops team is moving banks of simulators to get them back on the network as quickly as possible. While they have begun the process, it may take several hours for all of the affected regions to come up. Some regions will continue to be unavailable as their network connections are still down, but we will be working to get everything back online and back to normal as quickly as we can. Please note: regions are not being enabled individually and we are unable to provide status on or prioritize any particular region.

[Update 1:15PM Pacific on 08/08/07]
The Concierge and Billing phone numbers have now returned to service. The ops team continues to work to re-enable our network access. As soon as they are able to, logins will be restored and we will update here. Thank you.

[Update 12:15 PM Pacific on 08/08/07]
We are experiencing issues with Concierge and Billing phone numbers at this time. You may experience issues reaching our personnel or experience extended wait times. We are working to correct this as well. Thank you for your patience.

[Update 12:00 PM Pacific on 08/08/07]
Logins are still disabled as our ops team works to resolve our network connectivity problems. No ETA yet, but we will update further as we get more details. Thank you for your continued patience.

[10:27 AM Pacific on 08/08/07]

Second Life is experiencing issues related to network connectivity at one of our co-location facilities. Logins to Second Life have been temporarily disabled. Our Server Team is working to resolve this as soon as possible. We will post further information as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Second Life Logins Temporarily Disabled

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 at 10:30 AM PDT by: rheyalinden

[11:04 AM PDT on 07/31/2007]

Second Life is now accepting logins. One of our central database servers suffered a failure (an unfortunately common theme of late). Our Operations team began a recovery on the server almost immediately and things have returned to normal. As the cause of the failure is still unknown, we will continue to investigate. It is possible that more work, including grid downtime, will be necessary to completely correct the problems. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

[10:35 AM on 07/31/2007]

Logins to Second Life are temporarily disabled at this time to fix several issues. More information will be available as we have it. Thank you.

[10:28 AM on 07/31/2007]

At the present time there are issues when attempting to log into Second Life. The Server Team is currently working on a resolution. More information will be available as we receive it. Thank you for your patience.

Not amused...

So, hey Good Morning SL, how are you feeling today? A little groggy, mayhaps? Let me tell you how I feel... I'm not amused. I logged in this a.m. to my L balance still Loading..., and guess what one person is missing from my friends list - only referred to as (waiting)? Yes, my Hawks. This is getting beyond frustrating, I'll be hunting a Linden down one by one soon. Hope you're not in a push enabled sim. It's one thing to fook with my L balance, but oh no, now you're messing with me & Hawks. It's Monday now, you'd think you could handle getting some work done today, ya think you could try?

DO NOT PANIC!

Hamsters have taken the grid hostage causing chaos & havoc across every sim...
  • TPs are down
  • Money transfers are stale
  • Ruth has been let out of her box & is converting helpless victims
  • Objects are missing &/or being eaten by the grid.
I advise all residents to bend over & kiss your asses goodbye.

I wanna go home!

Our sim is gone...
Hour two and Wildmutt is still an abyss. I could sit here & state the obvious of Hawks breaking it and stuff but instead I'll just whine & complain that I wanna go home & there's NO FUCKING LIVE HELP! Who the hell do we turn to when your SL husband crashes the sim & it doesn't come right back? LOL. Do not even get me started on the Jira, Wiki or wtf ever else they have. I want a live person RIGHT NOW giving me an eta on my home.

And is there a Linden online? Oh hell nah. How do I know? I im'd every single one, I think. Well most of them, but all went to offlines. Seriously customer service has gone to hell. I'm not one to make waves or anything. heh. So our neighbors are probably sitting over there "jajaja"ing away while we're homeless in Wildmutt.

We did manage to find other things outside our home to do. Including molesting the new photo booth in Tableau. Haha Rosie showed up just in time, otherwise Hawks prob woulda kept me in the booth longer! Seriously! "OHH NO, I DID NOT!!! Miss breaker of things by prematurely jumping off photobooths and assorted other infractions, that cannot go named before the population at large..."

Thank goodness for second homes. Still waiting for Wildmutt and it better not have eaten any of my shit!

Postcard Issues Continue...

After Hawks & I realized that our postcards weren't getting thru to Snapzilla last night I decided to test sending them to my email. Hm... I received them there fine and within like 3 minutes. Next step was to IM Cristiano. He was unavailable last night so I checked in with him this morning thinking that just mayhapsibly our postcards were stuck behind a pic of a big av ass & sitting in a queue. Newp. Not there.

Confirmed with LL they are still having problems - even if you did receive some to your email, others are still having problems - there is nothing Cris or you can do about it except keep reporting it. Bleh, I'm tired of reporting, and reporting and reporting. It was fixed... tell that guy to stop touching things! Snapzilla is my picture diary of my slife. I need it back. :(
